Als Maria nach dem Tod Ihres Sohnes Oliver von einem übersinnlichen Ritual erfährt, hofft sie, ihr totes Kind ein letztes Mal kontaktieren zu können, um ihm Lebewohl zu sagen. Also unternimmt sie eine Reise, die sie zu einem uralten Tempel führt, der als Portal zwischen der Welt der Lebenden und der Toten gilt. Hier missachtet sie das Verbot, eine geheimnisumwobene Tür zu öffnen. Anstatt den Tod auf diese Weise besser zu akzeptieren, schiebt Maria unwissentlich allerdings den Vorhang zum Jenseits beiseite und stößt damit ein Tor auf, das besser geschlossen geblieben wäre. Die Ordnung zwischen Tod und Leben wird gestört und Maria bekommt ihren Wunsch tatsächlich erfüllt: Der Geist ihres Sohnes kehrt zu ihr und der restlichen Familie zurück – oder ist es am Ende gar nicht Oliver, der sich bald in Marias Haus bemerkbar macht?
